Do Different Project Types Need Different Formats?

Yes — the dimensions above are universal, but which ones dominate shifts by project type:

  • New product/venture launches — Market feasibility dominates (demand validation, competitive positioning); financial feasibility includes revenue forecasting and market share assumptions.
  • IT/software projects — Technical feasibility dominates (architecture, integration, scalability, security); often includes a proof-of-concept or pilot phase as part of the study itself.
  • Construction/infrastructure projects — Legal/regulatory (zoning, permits, environmental) and financial feasibility (capital-intensive, long payback) dominate; often requires site studies and environmental impact assessments as sub-studies.
  • Internal process/operational projects — Operational feasibility dominates (can the organization absorb the change); market feasibility is often skipped entirely.
  • Public sector/government projects — Legal/regulatory and social/community impact take on outsized weight; often requires public consultation as part of the study.
  • M&A or capital investment projects — Financial feasibility dominates heavily, often including third-party valuation and due diligence.
